When driving a car like the Elise speeding could happen from time to time and in the Gatso age, it's not very funny to be confronted with speeding tickets all the time, or worse, to be confronted with an officer who's eager to take away your driving licence...

Sell the Elise?? No way! Buy a  g o o d radar detector (like the Bel Vector Europe 966R, available from Target in the Netherlands.
The feature of above mentioned detector is the concealed installation; no more boxes in front of the windshield (which are in favor of Belgian, France and some German officers) but an merely invisble unit. That is... in a 'normal car' the remote control unit can be built in and be covered by something, thus made more or less invisible. In an Elise?? no chance, the normal place to stick the remote control unit is under the interior light. When you stand behind the car, you've got a perfect view on the remote... no good !

The installation of the antenna can be found in the Front Clam area, there's a picture of the antenna fitted in the crash structure. (A serious crash will be even more expensive :( )
The remote control unit can be fitted under the interior light or you could decide to build a 'remote-remote control' unit as I did.

To start with, here are some pictures of the original electronics of the remote control unit:

To build up some sort of remote with the LED's and the switches, you'll have to remove the LED's. As you can see in below detail picture, only two of the four pins on the switch are connected.
In the right picture, you can see the components I've used for the remote. four more or less identical switches and a little piece of PCB to glue some SMD LED's on.

Now, the hard part comes up... connecting SMD LED's to a piece of wire isn't very easy. It's feasable if you didn't drink in the past three weeks ;) As you can see in below pictures, I started assembling the little PCB with four holes in it. There are four green LED's on the bottom and four red LED's on the top. These LED's are connected to the original LED connections on the BEL remote using very small wires.
In the picture at the right, you can see the complete assembly after I glued both parts together..

After connecting the little wires to the original Bel box, the complete assembly would look like the left picture below. I added a small case to make the thing look pretty.
In the right picture you can see the detector in real life, it's glued on the steering column which is very visible for me, but when switched off, there's only a small box with four switches visible. The LED's are invisible in this way...
